Red-breasted Merganser in Marietta

Who said rare ducks show up only in winter?  This adult female red-breasted merganser was spotted Friday, June 8, 2012 behind the Lafayette Hotel in Marietta.  She was just hanging out with the mallards, Canada geese, and domesticated waterfowl along the Ohio River’s edge.  This is one of very few summer records for red-breasted merganser in our region.
